  • Bilge İnsan Olmanın 37 Buyruğu

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hemen her başlığın ayrıntılarının bulunduğu kitapçıkta yer alan 37 buyruk ana başlıklarıyla şöyle:

    * Eleştirel düşünme, değerlendirme ve gözlemleme alışkanlıkları geliştirin.

    * Açık, mantıklı ve vurucu bir biçimde yazın.

    * Her yere, her zaman, her şeye yazın.

    * Yeni bir tartışma açın (tekrarcı olmayın).

    * Kitapları okumakla kalmayın, kitap yazın.

    * Kestirmeden gidin.

    * Etkileyici konuşmayı öğrenin.

    * Fazla kitabi olmayın.

    * Dağıtın ve birleştirin.

    * Fazla geniş genellemeler yapan toplumbilimcilere karşı uyanık olun.

    * Jack Webb-Badge 714 tarzı ''sadece gerçekleri söylüyorum efendim'' ci toplumbilimcilere karşı uyanık olun.

    * Kuram ve yöntemle ilgili doktrinel tartışmalarda katı biçimde taraf olmaktan doğabilecek tehlikelerden kaçının.

    * Değişiklikler yapın. Uzun bir süre belli bir alanın uzmanı olarak kalmayın.

    * Disipline odaklanın ama sorunlarla uğraşın ve disiplinlerarası çalışın.

    * Toplumu anlamaya yönelik bilimsel yaklaşımların olabilirliğini ve olması gerektiğini kabul etmeyen toplumbilimcilere karşı uyanık olun.

    * Toplumbilimin bilimsel ve insancıl konumunu araştırıp geliştirirken atış alanını şaşırmamalı, başka yerlerde oturanlara karşı hoşgörülü olmalısınız.

    * Hangi soruları soracağınızı bilmelisiniz.

    * Cesur olun. Riske girmekten korkmayın.

    * Sınırları genişletin.

    * Kısa dönemli ve uzun dönemli planlarınız, hedefleriniz olsun.

    * Yaşam da, toplumbilim de, tamamlanmamış işler, tamamlanmamış süreçlerdir.

    * Gerçek ve sanal topluluklar kurun.

    * Ustalara ve kendinize örnek alacağınız kişilere olduğu kadar beğenmediğiniz kişilere de dikkatle bakın.

    * Sizden daha bilgili, zeki ve başarılı insanları arayıp bulun.

    * ''Zafer ve felaketle tanışmayı ve bu iki sahtekâra da aynı şekilde davranmayı'' öğrenin.

    * Bencil olmayın! Zamanınızı ve düşüncelerinizi başkalarıyla paylaşın.

    * Akademisyen olmaktan gurur duyun.

    * Olduğu gibi anlatın. Güçlü olanlara da diğerlerine de gerçeği söyleyin.

    * Bilginin toplumbilime inanın ve sorumluluk duygusuyla kullanın.

    * Eylemde bulunan kişiyle (aktör) gözlemde bulunan kişinin bakış açıları arasında ustaca gidip gelmeyi öğrenin.

    * Araştırmacı ile tutucu (fundamentalist) arasındaki farkı bilin.

    * Bir grubu araştırmak için ona ait olmanız gerektiğini ve insanların ait oldukları grupları araştırmalarının şart olduğunu ileri süren dışlayıcı anlayıştan uzak durun.

    * Düşünce polisliğine kapılıp meslektaşlarınızın ırkçılık, cinsiyetçilik, sınıfçılık, eşcinsel düşmanlığı veya yaşlı düşmanlığı gibi belirtiler gösterip göstermediklerini bulmaya çalışmak için bütün zamanınızı harcamayın.

    * Kendinizi bütün değerlerden arınmış bir bilim adamı veya açıkça politik bir eylemci gibi hissettiğiniz zaman dikkatli olun.

    * Eğlenin! Yaptığınız işin keyfini çıkartın!

    * Nüktedan olun!

    * Sözünüzün eri olun!.. İlkelerin de düşüncelerin de önemli olduğunu ve insanın farklılıklar yaratabileceğini bilin. Bilginin cehaletten daha iyi olduğuna, bilginin mümkün olduğuna, insanlığa ve toplumsal koşullara dair görgülü ve bilimsel bilginin bu koşulları değiştirebileceğine inanın.

    (The children were sitting around, doing nothing (Çocuklar hiçbir şey yapmıyorlar, öylece oturuyorlardı.)

    The witness finally broke down on the stand. (Tanık sonunda durumu değiştirdi)

    GEÇİŞLİ FİİLLERE ÖRNEK

    Our boss called off the meeting. (Patronumuz toplantıyı erteledi)

    She looked up her old boyfriend.

    Örneğin; To make out: bir şeyin farkına varmak veya görmek, Bu sözcük grubu aynı sevişmek anlamına da gelebilir.

    If someone chooses to turn up the street (Eğer biri caddeden yukarı doğru gitmeyi tercih ederse)

    if your neighbors unexpectedly turn up (appear) at a party or your brother turns up his radio,

    "Fill this out," (Bunu doldurun) diyebiliriz ya da
    "Fill out this form." diyebiliriz.

  • A Haunted Hous
    By Virginia Woolf

    Whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting. From room to room they went, hand in hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure--a ghostly couple.

    "Here we left it," she said. And he added, "Oh, but here tool" "It's upstairs," she murmured. "And in the garden," he whispered. "Quietly," they said, "or we shall wake them."

    But it wasn't that you woke us. Oh, no. "They're looking for it; they're drawing the curtain," one might say, and so read on a page or two. "Now they've found it,' one would be certain, stopping the pencil on the margin. And then, tired of reading, one might rise and see for oneself, the house all empty, the doors standing open, only the wood pigeons bubbling with content and the hum of the threshing machine sounding from the farm. "What did I come in here for? What did I want to find?" My hands were empty. "Perhaps its upstairs then?" The apples were in the loft. And so down again, the garden still as ever, only the book had slipped into the grass.

    But they had found it in the drawing room. Not that one could ever see them. The windowpanes reflected apples, reflected roses; all the leaves were green in the glass. If they moved in the drawing room, the apple only turned its yellow side. Yet, the moment after, if the door was opened, spread about the floor, hung upon the walls, pendant from the ceiling--what? My hands were empty. The shadow of a thrush crossed the carpet; from the deepest wells of silence the wood pigeon drew its bubble of sound. "Safe, safe, safe" the pulse of the house beat softly. "The treasure buried; the room . . ." the pulse stopped short. Oh, was that the buried treasure?

    A moment later the light had faded. Out in the garden then? But the trees spun darkness for a wandering beam of sun. So fine, so rare, coolly sunk beneath the surface the beam I sought always burned behind the glass. Death was the glass; death was between us, coming to the woman first, hundreds of years ago, leaving the house, sealing all the windows; the rooms were darkened. He left it, left her, went North, went East, saw the stars turned in the Southern sky; sought the house, found it dropped beneath the Downs. "Safe, safe, safe," the pulse of the house beat gladly. 'The Treasure yours."

    The wind roars up the avenue. Trees stoop and bend this way and that. Moonbeams splash and spill wildly in the rain. But the beam of the lamp falls straight from the window. The candle burns stiff and still. Wandering through the house, opening the windows, whispering not to wake us, the ghostly couple seek their joy.

    "Here we slept," she says. And he adds, "Kisses without number." "Waking in the morning--" "Silver between the trees--" "Upstairs--" 'In the garden--" "When summer came--" 'In winter snowtime--" "The doors go shutting far in the distance, gently knocking like the pulse of a heart.

    Nearer they come, cease at the doorway. The wind falls, the rain slides silver down the glass. Our eyes darken, we hear no steps beside us; we see no lady spread her ghostly cloak. His hands shield the lantern. "Look," he breathes. "Sound asleep. Love upon their lips."

    Stooping, holding their silver lamp above us, long they look and deeply. Long they pause. The wind drives straightly; the flame stoops slightly. Wild beams of moonlight cross both floor and wall, and, meeting, stain the faces bent; the faces pondering; the faces that search the sleepers and seek their hidden joy.

    "Safe, safe, safe," the heart of the house beats proudly. "Long years--" he sighs. "Again you found me." "Here," she murmurs, "sleeping; in the garden reading; laughing, rolling apples in the loft. Here we left our treasure--" Stooping, their light lifts the lids upon my eyes. "Safe! safe! safe!" the pulse of the house beats wildly. Waking, I cry "Oh, is this your buried treasure? The light in the heart."

  • The present continuous tense (also called the present progressive tense) is commonly used in English for actions happening right now, or in the future.

    Forming The Present Continuous Tense
    This tense is formed using two components: the verb BE (in the present tense), and the -ING form of a verb. Here are the rules, using the example verb "sing":
    Subject BE -ING FORM
    I am singing

    He is singing
    She is singing
    It is singing
    We are singing
    They are singing

    With many verbs, the you can simply add -ING to the end of the verb. However, with some verbs, you need to change the ending a little. Here are the rules:

  • RELATIVE PRONOUNS

    1.) I received the report. (Raporu aldım.) You had sent the report. (Raporu göndermiştin)
    2.) I found the book. (Kitabı buldum.) The book was important. (Kitap önemliydi.)
    Bu cümleleri kendi aralarında birleştirecek olursak;
    I received the report which you had sent. (Göndermiş olduğunuz kitabı aldım.)
    Dikkat edilirse bu cümlede nesne konumunda olan "the report" kelimesi ilgi zamiri olan "which" ile yer değiştirdi. "which" aynı zamanda iki cümleyi birbirine bağlayarak bağlaç olarak işlev gördü."which you had sent"cümleciği "Relative pronoun, Relative Clouse veya Adjective Clouse" olmak üzere üç şekilde adlandırılabilir.

    Not: Nesneiken ilgi zamiri ile kısaltılanlar Türkçe'ye "...dığı" olarak çevrilir. Başka bir değişle ilgi zamirinden sonra "özne" varsa Türkçe'ye "...dığı" olarak çevrilir

    I found the book which was important. (Önemli olan kitabı buldum.)

    Bu cümlede ise özne konumunda olan "the book" kelimesi, ilgi zamiri olan "which" ile yer değiştirdi.

    Not: Özne iken ilgi zamiri ile kısaltılanlar Türkçe'ye "...en, ...an" olarak çevrilir. Başka bir değişle ilgi zamirinden sonra fiil varsa Türkçe'ye "...en, ...an" olarak çevrilir.
    Which: Cansızlar ve hayvanlar için kullanılır
    Who: İnsanlar için kullanılır.
    That: Hem who hem de which yerine "that" kullanılabilir. İkisi de nesnel formda iken "...dığı"; öznel formda iken "...en, ...an" olarak çevrilir.

    İlgi zamirinden sonraki cümle bir cümlecik olur ve öncesindeki ismi niteler. Türkçe'ye çevirirken bu cümleciğin anlamını isimden önce söylemek gerekir.
    The agreement which they signed. (Onların imzaladığı anlaşma)
    The workers who I met.(Karşılaştığım işçiler.)
    The man who you are waiting for.(Beklediğiniz kişi.)
    The scientist who devised this method. (Bu metodu bulan bilim adamı.)
    The student who won the scholership. (Bursu kazanan öğrenci.)
    A car which runs 100 miles on hour. (Saatte 100 mil giden araba.)

    Not: İlgi zamirinin önünde mutlaka bir isim vardır ve yan cümlecik bu ismi niteler.
    Unfortunately, we can not publish the article which you have sent. (Maalesef gönderdiğiniz makaleyi yayınlayamıyoruz.)

    Eğer "the article"ı niteleyen bir sıfat kelimesi olsaydı "article"den önce yazılması gerekirdi. "the article" bir sıfat cümleciği ile nitelendiği için bir ilgi zamiri ile sonrasından gelmiştir. Çeviride sıfat cümleciğinin anlamı isimden önce söylenir.
    He had to dismiss the boy who made noise. (Gürültü yapan çocuğu kovmak zorunda kaldı.)
    The man who robbed the bank was cought by the police. (Bankayı soyan adam polis tarafından yakalandı.

    ● OF WHOM ve OF WHİCH

    ...ki onu, ...ki onların anlamında da çevrilebilirler."of whom" canlılar için; "of which" cansızlar için kullanılır. bu iki ilgi zamiri bir grup isminde bazılarını tanımlarken kullanılır.
    I have four sons who are students. (Öğrenci olan dört oğlum var.)
    Bu cümlede sıfat cümleciği (öğrenci olan) çocukların hepsini niteler. Peki bu dört cocuğun hepsi değilde, ikisi veya üçü öğrenci olsa cümlemizi nasıl söyleyeceğiz? İşte burada "of"whom ve of which" devreye girer.
    Eğer ikisi öğrenci olan dört cocuk var ise cümle şöyle kurulur:
    I have four sons, two of whom are students.(İkisi öğrenci olan dört oğlum var.)

    Virgüle ve gruptan belirtilmek istenen sayının ilgi zamirinden önce geldiğine dikkat ediniz. Bu kullanımda artık sıfat cümleciği dört cocuğu değil; ilgi zamirinden önce gelen ve çocuklardan ikisini belirten "two"yu niteler.
    He had many houses which were in Ankara. (Onun Ankara'da olan bir çok evi vardır.)
    He had many houses, some of which were in Ankara. (Onun, bazıları Ankara'da olan bir çok evi vardır.)

    ...ki onun, ...ki onların anlamındadır. İyelik belirten zamirdir. Son on yılın KPDS sınavlarında en çok sorulan ilgi zamiridir. Sınav tekniği kolay, uygulaması zordur. Hem canlı hem de cansızlar için kullanılır. direk sorulması beklenen bir konudur.

    The woman who was wounded was carying. (Yaralanan bayan ağlıyordu.)
    The woman whose husband was wounded was carying. (Eşi yaralanan bayan ağlıyordu.)

    Not. Mutlaka ama mutlaka "whose"dan önce ve sonra bir isim olmalıdır. Sonrasında bir zamir veya başka bir kelime gelemez. Sonrasında gelen ismin önünde kesinlikle "the" artikeli olamaz. Bu özellik posessive'likten kaynaklanmaktadır.

    I bought a car whose engine was out of order. (Motoru bozuk olan bir araba aldım.)
    The houses whose roofs were shaking in the storm collapsed. (Çatıları fırtınada sallanan evler yıkıldı.)
    Collapse: yıkılmak
    Our manager,whose son studies in the USA will go there next month. (Oğlu USA'da okuyan müdürümüz önümüzdeki ay oraya gidecek.)

    "That" cümleden ne zaman atılabilir?

    that kelimesi bir yan cümleciği bir önceki eyleme bağlamak için kullanılan bir bağlaçtır. Bu yadıda kullanıldığında that bazen "tamamlayıcı(pekiştirici) that." adıyla da anılır. Kelime çoğunlukla gözardı edilse de bir çok durumda her görüldüğü cümleden çıkarılmak yoluna da gidildiği görülür ki bu da pek olumlu bir durum değildir.

    Örnekleri inceleyiniz:

    - Isabel knew [that] she was about to be fired.
    - She definitely felt [that] her fellow employees hadn't supported her.
    - I hope [that] she doesn't blame me.

    Bazı durumlarda that kelimisenin atılması cümlenin akışında bir kesinti oluşturabilir ki bu da virgül kullanılıraka giderilebilir.

    Örnekleri inceleyiniz (that yerine virgül işareti kullanılmış):

    -The problem is, that production in her department has dropped.

    - Remember, that we didn't have these problems before she started working here.

    Genel bir kural olarak, eğer cümleniz that atıldığında daha iyi 'duruyorsa', cümlede anlam kargaşası meydana gelmiyorsa ve cümle that kelimesi olmadan daha zarif (ritmik) duruyorsa bu öğeyi rahatlıkla cümlenizden çıkarabilirsiniz.. Theodore Bernstein that kelimesini cümlede tutmamız gereken üç durumu listeler:

    - Cümlecik ve eylem arasına bir zaman öğesi girdiğinde: "The boss said yesterday that production in this department was down fifty percent." ("yesterday." zaman zarfının konumuna dikkat edin)

    - Cümleciğin fiili iyice gerilere atılmışsa (geciktirilmişse): "Our annual report revealed that some losses sustained by this department in the third quarter of last year were worse than previously thought." ("losses" ve onun fiili olan, "were."e dikkat edin)

    - İkinci bir that öğesi kimin neyi yaptığını ya da söylediğini açığa kavuşturuyorsa: "The CEO said that Isabel's department was slacking off and that production dropped precipitously in the fourth quarter." (Did the CEO say that production dropped or was the drop a result of what he said about Isabel's department? İkinci that cümleyi daha anlaşılır kılıyor.)

    Not: Genellikle that yerine bir çok cümlede which öğesini görürüz. That ve which arasında kesin bir ayrım olmamakla birlikte bir çok dilbilimci ve yazar which'in daha formal olduğunu ve yazı resmi dilinde tercih edilmesi gerektiği görüşünü savunur.

    All of us are born, and all of us will die; but there is infinite variety in the nature and circumstances of these two events themselves and in what happens to our bodies and our minds in between. Some individuals, for example, are born without difficulty and grow uninterruptedly during childhood and adolescence, suffering at worst only minor infectious diseases and accidents. As adults, they reproduce their kind. They age gradually until, in extreme old age, they die peacefully without pain or discomfort. This is an idealised picture of how we would like things to be, rather than the reality that most people experience. Death comes to many of us, not when we are very old, but during or before birth, in infancy, in adolescence, in early adulthood or in middle age.

    98. One point made by the author in this passage is that we, as human beings, .
    A- must face the fact that accidents in old age are inevitable

    C- all enjoy a happy childhood and a healthy adolescence
    D- ought to take certain measures to avoid infections diseases in childhood
    E- have widely differing experiences of birth, life and death

    99. The writer points out that, though most people expect life to be free of care and death easy, .. .
    A- this is not likely to happen either in adolescence or in adulthood.
    B- they have to strive hard to attain this idealised condition
    C- this is, in fact, very rarely the case
    D- for many people a worthwhile life has more to it than this
    E- this is said in the case except in old age

    100. In this passage the writer points out the disparity between .
    A- the basically fortunate lives of the majority and the tragic experiences of a small minority
    B- what everyone expects of life and what he actually achieves in life
    C- the early happy years of our lives, and the later, tragic ones
    D- the near ideal life experience of the few and the actual life experience of the majority
    E-the happier middle years of a person's life and the more trying later years
